  BACHELOR OF MANAGEMENT STUDIES (B.M.S.) 

 

This course was introduced by the University of Mumbai in the year 1999-2000.  With the growing demand for professionally qualified management executives, the course has been especially designed to create middle cadre management personnel.

 It is a three-year degree course, with six semesters, managed by a full-time and visiting faculty drawn from the Industrial and Service sectors.  The College is committed to providing in-depth training using the latest equipment in computers, practical experience, industrial visits and summer placements, wherever possible.

ELIGIBILITY:

A candidate, for being eligible for admission to the B.M.S. degree course shall have passed XIIth std. Examination conducted by the Maharashtra State Board of Higher Secondary Education or any examination recognized as equivalent thereto at one and the same sitting or Diploma in any Engineering branch conducted by the Board of Technical Education, Maharashtra State with two years or three years or four years duration after passing the Secondary School Certificate (S.S.C.) examination or any examination recognized as equivalent thereto and should have secured not less than 45% marks in case of students belonging to Open Category and not less than 40% marks in the case of students belonging to Reserved Category.

 

Application forms for admission to the First Year BMS will be available on our website at www.xaviers.edu in the section Noticeboard, from the last week of May. They may be sent by registered post or courier, with all the indicated documents, to reach in time for the admission process. These Application forms will also be made available at the College Office, from the day the H.S.C. results of the Maharashtra State Board (XII standard) are announced. They should be submitted to the College Office with documentation, within the time frame that will be announced by the University of Mumbai and displayed on our noticeboards, including the online noticeboard.

 

The actual admissions will begin only after the declaration of results of the XII in Mumbai. This date will be announced sometime in May but is likely to be anytime after the 25th of May. Admissions will be done on the basis of the total marks scored in all subjects taken in the XII standard exam. There is no entrance test for this course.

Students passing the H.S.C. or any other examinations conducted by Boards/Universities outside Maharashtra State, should first obtain and submit a provisional eligibility certificate from the Registrar, University of Mumbai, Eligibility Section, Vidyanagari, Santacruz (E), Mumbai – 400 098, before they seek admission to the Senior College. To apply for this one has to display the original Mark sheet at the office, along with 2 xerox copies. After Admission, for confirmation of the eligibility, students should submit to the College Office, before the close of the first term, the Statement of Marks, the Passing Certificate and the Migration Certificate.

At the time of admission the student must submit the following documents in original along with duly attested photocopies.

1. H.S.C. Marksheet

2. Baptism Certificate (For the Minority community - Christians)

3. Caste Certificate (if applicable)

4. Documentary Evidence regarding special category status:

Special Category consists of:

· Wards of Transferred State/Central Govt. and Pvt. Sector employees, wards of employees of Defence Dept./ex-service personnel, wards of Freedom Fighters, physically handicapped candidates, and students who have met with accidents.

· AWARD WINNERS at the District/State/National Level in Sports or cultural activities.

The total fees, including deposit and laboratory fees, as prescribed by the Mumbai University, are as follows:

F.Y.B.M.S.    Rs.11,000/- (approx.)

S.Y.B.M.S.    Rs. 9,580/-  (approx.)

T.Y.B.M.S.    Rs.10,100/-  (approx)

An upgradation of these fees is expected for the year 2007-2008

 

Note: The Reserved Category Candidates (i.e. SC,ST,VJNT,DT,SBC & OBC) will be entitled to exemption of certain fees as prescribed by the Government, subject to submission of necessary documents along with the application form, to be held eligible for such concession.

 

 

DURATION:

1.       The Course shall be a full-time course.  The duration of the course shall be of six semesters spread over three years.

2.       Number of students: A batch shall consist of not more than 60 students.

3.       The course shall consist of 39 modules comprising 38 theory papers and 1 project.

i)                     Total number of lectures per theory paper shall be minimum of 50 and a maximum of 55, each of 50 minutes duration.

ii)                   For the project work, the teacher shall initially engage about 5 lectures for orientation.  The students shall visit the field for data collection and analyze the same.  Before the report is finalized the students shall present their findings to the faculty wherein the faculty shall provide guidelines for finalization.

 

 

 

 

 BACHELOR OF MASS MEDIA (B.M.M.)

 

 

This is a course introduced from the academic year, 2000-2001, by the University of Mumbai.  It has been designed to provide students with a firm grounding in communication skills.  It aims to develop an ability for critical thinking and creativity and to give the students an opportunity to combine the theoretical curriculum with practical applications, through detailed research, lucid writing skills, oral presentation skills and a  mastery of various mass communications media in our global information age.

Students who have passed the H.S.C. examination in Arts, Science or Commerce, with not less than 50% marks, are eligible to apply for this course. 

Like the B.M.S. course, this is also a three-year degree course with six semesters.  The areas of specialization in the third year are: Advertising and Journalism.  During the second year, the students receive on-the-job training through Internship.  Besides this, Group Discussions, Seminars and Field Visits will be conducted during the course of 3 years.

SCHEME OF EXAMINATION FOR BMS & BMM

i)                     The examination shall be conducted at the end of each Semester.

ii)                   A theory paper shall carry 100 marks.  The evaluation of the performance of the students in theory papers shall be on the basis of both internal assessment (40%) and semester examination (60%).  Internal evaluation shall be on the basis of class assignment, group discussions, seminar attendance etc.  The Semester end examination shall be held at the end of each Semester and shall be of 2hours’ duration.

iii)                  The responsibility of evaluation during the first 4 Semesters shall rest with the College/ Institution wherein the students are admitted for the course.  The College/Institution shall carry out the internal evaluation for theory papers in Semesters V & VI while the University shall conduct the Semester-end examination for these two Semesters.  The Internal evaluation marks of students appearing for Semester V and VI shall be sent to the University by the respective College/Institution before the commencement of the respective semester-end examination.

iv)                  The evaluation of Projects I & II shall be carried out by the examiners appointed by the University inclusive of viva-voce examination.  The project reports shall be assessed for 60% of the total marks while the viva-voce examination shall carry 40% of the marks.

 

 

 

PASSING STANDARDS FOR BMS & BMM

i)                     A candidate shall have to obtain a minimum of 50% marks in each theory paper and project to clear a particular semester.

ii)                   A candidate shall be placed in the First Class with Distinction if s/he secures a minimum of 50% marks in each of the theory papers and projects in Semesters V & VI, considered separately, and at least 60% marks on the aggregate.

iii)                  A candidate shall be placed in the First Class if he/she secures a minimum of 50% marks in each of the theory papers and projects in Semesters V & VI, considered separately, and at least 60% marks on the aggregate.

iv)                  A candidate shall be place in the Second Class if s/he secures a minimum of 50% marks in each of the theory papers and projects in Semesters V & VI, considered separately, and at least 50% marks on the aggregate.

v)                    A candidate shall have to secure at least 50% marks in each of the theory papers and projects to pass the examination.

vi)                  A candidate who fails in any particular theory papers shall be allowed to reappear for those particular theory papers.  However, his/her internal evaluation marks shall be carried over, but s/he shall not be entitled to any class on passing.

vii)                 A candidate who fails in more than two theory papers at the Semester-end examination shall not be allowed to keep terms for the next Semester.
