 International Programmes (2008-09)

 

“Globalization of Education” has become an important buzz word today and education which was confined to the lecture halls has crossed international boundaries.

With the broad vision and leadership of the College Academic Council, the International Programs are steadily growing in number and scope. The aims are:

  • To create Awareness on Available International scholarships

  • To give Global Exposure to our students and faculty

  • To encourage Student Exchange / enrichment programmes

  • To facilitate Faculty Enrichment Programmes

 

Scholarships:

Goldman Sach’s Scholarship:

 In keeping with the tradition of participating in Goldman Sach’s Global Leadership Programme, the college nominated 10 students for the year 2008-09. Ms. Shriya Pilgaonkar SYBA and Mr. Himanshu Mishra SYBA were among the first 29 students from all over India and were awarded USD 3000/- each along with a training programme on Leadership held at the Hotel Taj – Lands End, Bandra. From among these 29 students, a contingent of 15 students was selected to attended a 10 day fully sponsored trip to New York to meet various world leaders and interact with Goldman Sach’s awardees from the rest of the world. Ms. Shriya Pilgaonkar was selected to be part of the contingent.

Teach For India Scholarship : Volunteerism and Opportunities for Scholarship Ms. Shaheen Mistry  - ‘Teach for India’ Programme Director and Mr. Keyvan Sadig ‘Google’, USA spoke to the students on the concept  “Teach for India”. They explained the need for education, for school kids in rural India and how young Xavierites could make a change. They also briefed them on various opportunities for scholarships available for volunteers. As a result, TY students applied and after meeting very stringent criteria, 4 TY students and 2 ex-Xavierites have been selected for the prestigious programme.

 “Opportunities in Economics, Political Science and Sociology” Ms. Preeti Dawra, Head, Strategic Communications, National University of Singapore, spoke on  Opportunities in Economics at NUS (National University of Singapore).

Ms. Prabhu from the British Council, Mumbai held two sessions on “Scholarships in Higher Education” for  Arts &Science students.

Academic Exchange Programmes:

Harvard Colleges in Asia Program (HCAP): St. Xavier’s was one of the 9 institutions from Asia, invited to participate in this global leadership exchange programme. Nine students took part in a one week international conference on “Opportunities and Challenges: Education in Globalised World” at Harvard, USA.

The team from the Royal Academy of Arts and Complicite, London, UK had a four day interactive workshop with 8 of our selected students and produced a unique film on “Touching Space”, partially shot at Xavier’s. A similar activity was conducted across the globe in the UK at  Ashmole School, London.  The film has been uploaded on Royal Academy of Art’s website for exhibition. http://www.royalacademy.org.uk/exhibitions/gsk-contemporary-season/exhibitions/works-installations-throughout-the-season/touching-space/

The students were encouraged to think creatively about physical and virtual communication and to leave space for half of the performance to be created on the other side of the world by another group of students. This attempt to touch space led to hitherto unknown interactions with imagined collaborators and the discovery of strategic collisions and surprises.

Under the British Prime Minister’s Global Leadership Program, two British students Ugochi and Stephanie attended lectures for 15 days on Economics and Sociology (Junior College) and Ancient Indian Culture (Senior College). With the help of 5 Junior College students, these British students completed their project on “Impact of Globalisation on the Indian Education System”. Prof. Vaishali Mohini and Prof. Amrita Nadkarni from the Junior College guided the students. Family stay, provided to these two students with two families of our students Vidhi Thakkar and Priyanka Hemmadi, gave them an unique opportunity to learn about Indian Culture.

The programme “Debating Matters” by British Council  gave an opportunity to six of our junior college students to participate in the National Level Debating Competition where they reached the Regional Level.

An International Colloquium was organized on 15th and 16th December 2008 on “Education and Society” in collaboration with the Liverpool Hope University(LHU), UK.  Prof. Gerard Pillay, Vice-Chancellor and Rector of LHU and Prof. Bart McGettrick, Dean of Education from LHU along with Dr. Wendy Bignold and Dr. Keith Paterson participated in the two day deliberations on the subject. The key note address was delivered by Dr. Pillay. Eminent speakers were Dr. Rajesh Parikh, Ms Teesta Setalvad, Dr. Farida Lambay and Dr. Kersi Chawda. Thirty five participants from other institutions from Mumbai and thirty faculty members from Xavier’s participated in this colloquium. At the end of the colloquium Prof. Pillay inaugurated an Institute for Research on Education and Society, for collaborative research between faculty at St. Xavier’s and Liverpool Hope Univ.

This ongoing collaborative Faculty Research Programme resulted in two Joint Research Presentations at the World Universities Forum Conference at IIT, Bombay. Phil Bamber (Liverpool Hope University, UK), Chrissie D’Costa, (St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai) and Wendy Bignold (Liverpool Hope University, UK) presented a paper on  “The Impact of Social Involvement and Community Engagement on Students in Higher Education in India and England: A Comparative Study”. The second presentation on “Establishing a Joint Research Institute between Two Institutions in India and UK: Lessons From Practice”, was by Dr. Fr. Arun D’Souza (St. Xavier’s College), Wendy Bignold (Liverpool Hope University, UK) and Prof. Peter Clough (Liverpool Hope University, UK).

 

The Department of Psychology organized an eight day Summer Course in July 2008 on Global Health in collaboration with the Institute of Public Health Sciences of Yeshiva University, Bronx, New York, USA. The Summer program was inaugurated by Fr. Fuster. Six students and two faculty members from Yeshiva University and 35 students and 4 faculty members from Xavier’s participated in this course.

An On-line Joint Certificate Course by the University of Stuttgart, Germany and the English Department, St. Xavier’s College was successfully completed in April 2009. Nine students from UStutt and ten students from SXC participated in this course and a joint seminar was held in St. Xavier’s College in April 2009. The theme was "Globalization: The American Effect".

Seventeen students from Economics, Sociology, Commerce and BMS along with Prof. Hermione Salazar and Prof. Madhuri Raijada visited Stern Business School, New York University, NY, USA from 16th May 2009 to 31st May 2009. This visit was a part of the MOU signed by SXC and Stern Business School, for exchange of students from both institutions. Students completed the course on “International Business Strategy” conducted by Prof. Srivastan of Stern. They also worked on projects and made a presentation on the Impact of the Global Financial Crisis on IT Outsourcing (with emphasis on India).  Three Commerce students were provided a complete scholarship and three students were provided partial scholarship for this trip.

Summer Session at University of California, Berkeley 2009 was attended by 16 students. Dr. Nandita Mangalore who attended this 6 weeks summer session audited two courses in Education at UCB.

Under the United Kingdom India Education and Research Initiatives (UKIERI) British Council Division, British High Commission, New Delhi jointly awarded a GBP 50,000/- grant to St. Xavier’s College and the University of Bath, UK to launch a new one year intensive M.Sc. Programme in Industrial Biotechnology and Enterprise.   (for details, refer www.xaviers.edu). Under this programme, Dr. Vivien Amonkar, Dr. Rajendra Shinde, Dr. Madhuri Hambarde and Prof. Gupte visited the University of Bath (UB), UK for a week, to formulate the syllabi for the M.Sc. IBE programme. Two faculty members from the University of Bath will attend the IBE at St. Xavier’s College and faculty from Xavier’s will attend Staff Development programme at the UB.

Visiting / Guests / Exchange students 2008-09: The College hosted three French students from IESEG, Lille Catholic University – for the BMS, 2 US students as guests in SYBA and TY BA; 1 Belgian Student in SY BA; and 2 British Students in Junior College  (Prime Minister’s Global Leadership Exchange Programme)

Junior College and International Programme:  A Delegation of  20 Teachers and Principals of European Schools visited our Junior college staff and students. On 24th Nov, 2008 ten of our Junior college teachers had  training and hands on practice on the EUMIND e-journal at Xavier’s Knowledge Center.

Some of the proposed projects under EUMIND in collaboration with their European Counterparts are Heritage Walk and Mangrove Project at Nature Park Mahim, Bandra – Kurla CRZ . Our Students beginning with FYJC 2009-10 will work on EUMIND projects starting SEPT 09. Projects will be coordinated by the Europe EUMIND coordinator Ludo Mathusen and Profs. Anjali Lokur and Prof. Theo Pereira at our end.

New Tie - Ups:

Science Po, a renowned institute from Paris has signed an MOU with us for an exchange of students in the Humanities. Two students from Science Po will be on campus for the year 2009-10. One of the our students will study at Science Po for a year.

The University of Stuttgart, Germany has signed an MOU with our English Department to launch an on line certificate course in English literature and related fields. The Department has just completed the course for the current academic year.

International Guest Speakers:

A number of International Speakers visit the college for various purpose. CIP has used this opportunity to organise some interactive lectures with them.

Dr. Akshay Shah, Clinical Asst. Prof. – Wayne State University, USA - spoke on “Infectious Diseases”

Mr. Fred Pearce, British Journalist – sponsored  by the British Council gave a talk titled “Confessions of an Eco-Sinner”

Prof. Dr. Stephen Yeaman, Newcastle University, UK – gave a Lecture, “Diabetes – Biochemistry of the Disease and its Cure”

 

Shadow of Terror:

The terror on 26th November 2008 made its impact on St. Xavier’s International Programme. A group of 35 students and 6 faculty members from Deakin University, Australia; 40 students and 2 faculty from Stern Business School- NYU, USA and a group of 16 students from Harvard University, USA cancelled their trips to Xavier’s in the wake of the Terror Attacks.

In spite of the shadow of terror and their daily workload, the faculty of St. Xavier’s worked to achieve practically all the goals set by the council and college. Congratulations to all of them!
