Students' Council
The Students’
Council started off at St. Xavier’s College as the
College Committee in 1943. It was changed to the
Students’ Union Council, when the University made
elections mandatory in Colleges. However, for the last
20 years, the Government of Maharashtra has banned
student elections on campus and the Students’ Council is
now nominated by the Principal from among those who
apply for the post of student representative. They then
choose their own Secretary and other officials. The
democratic tradition at St. Xavier’s has always been
strong and student initiative and participation in
activities on campus has been phenomenal.
In the last few
years, the Students’ Council has been involved in
organising:
·
The Teachers’ Day
function which often has the Teachers themselves
performing.
·
Mosaic: A two-day
inter-departmental exhibition on a common topic chosen
by the Council.
·
The Students’ Council
Day: Better known as ‘Traditional day’, with a large
number of students coming turned out in their best
traditional attire. The College Social is also held on
this day.
·
Career Fairs: an
attempt to increase choice and to give exposure to the
lesser-known opportunities.
·
The TY- Farewell: a
celebration with a different theme every year,
·
Graduation Snaps: a
photo session in graduation garb for each Final Year
class.
·
An E-newsletter: to
announce the upcoming events in College.
Contributions are welcome on:
xsc0708@gmail.com. Student queries and suggestions
are also invited, so that student participation in the
life on campus is assured.
The Students’
Council also nominates two students on the IQAC – the
Internal Quality Assurance Cell of the College, which is
the main decision-making body of the College, and on the
Grievance Cell – which enquires into complaints of a
personal nature made by students and faculty.
