With a heavy heart we inform you of the sad demise of our beloved Dr. Ms. Yvonne Freitas, on 15th January 2012, after a brief illness.

She touched the lives and hearts of countless students of Microbiology, during the forty years she taught at St. Xavier’s. For several of those years, she was the Head of Department and also served as Vice Principal of the College.

We will have a Mass for Dr. Freitas, at 4 pm, on Sat. 28th January, 2012 at St. Xavier’s College Chapel, followed by a Memorial Service in the College Hall at 4.30 pm.

The Food Safety & Standards Rules, 2011 replaced the 50-year Prevention of Food Adulteration Act from the first week of August. The focus of safety is on the entire supply chain: production, processing, distribution, and marketing. For the first time, the law puts the responsibility of food safety on the manufacturer & not the inspector inspecting and prosecuting the food vendor.

As this becomes mandatory for all college canteens as well, the Dept. of Microbiology initiated the organization of a training programme for the canteen staff of the college.
